William C. Waller

Lt. William C. Waller, of Erie, PA, was credited with the 79th FG’s last confirmed aerial victory, when he shot down a German Me-109 on 24 September 1944 over Mulhouse, France.
 
Lt. Waller flew 74 missions with the 79th FG, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
 
After the war, William Waller attended Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, PA, but shortly before graduating was recalled to serve in the Air Force, flying jets in the Korean War. He decided to make the Air Force his career while in Korea. He was also an accomplished musician, and wherever he was stationed was part of a small band.
 
William Waller passed away in 1968.
